Internal auditors, including CIAs, can meet their CPE requirements with both free resources and paid self-study options, but choosing the right provider among them can be difficult. To help you, this page compares six internal audit CPE resources.
| Provider | What It Offers Internal Auditors | Cost | Credit Type / Notes |
| CPEThink.com | NASBA QAS Self-Study CPE courses on auditing-relevant subjects (for example, Internal Audit Challenges of a Pandemic, Auditing field of study) | Per course or by subscription (see CPE subscriptions) | NASBA QAS Self-Study; not an IIA-approved sponsor. Per the IIA's own CPE Policy, formal self-study programs relevant to internal audit can count toward CIA CPE, with the individual responsible for documenting eligibility. |
| The IIA (Institute of Internal Auditors) | OnDemand courses, webinars, instructor-led training, conferences, and certificate programs; CPE credits vary by item | No prices published on the pages checked; members get some webinars free and discounts on others; membership fee not publicly listed | The professional association for internal auditors; its Professional Certifications Board (PCB) sets the CPE requirements CIAs report against |
| Protiviti | Free, CPE-eligible internal audit webinars and events (events.protiviti.com) | Free, registration required | Consulting firm-hosted webinars and CPE days; NASBA-registered; credit requires live attendance and poll responses |
| PwC | Free, CPE-eligible webcasts covering internal audit, accounting, and assurance topics (pwc.com/us/en/library/webcasts) | Free | Big 4 firm-hosted webcasts; PwC publishes its own CPE sponsorship and requirements page |
| Free Live CPE | Free aggregator/calendar of live CPE webinars from multiple providers, including internal-audit-specific sessions | Free (aggregator; not a course provider itself) | No paid product of its own; lists other providers' live events |
| CPAacademy.org | Free live CPE webinar platform spanning many topics, including internal audit sessions | Free | Webinar platform hosting sessions from many presenters; NASBA-registered |

Different methods are available to complete internal audit training apart from using an IIA-approved provider. It's important to note that, irrespective of the method you choose, you're fully responsible for making sure that your CPE hours comply with the guidelines set forth by the PCB.
Educational programs:
You should be able to meet all your CIA CPE and other internal audit requirements by enrolling in any of these programs, if they adhere to the IIA's guidelines.
Other eligible activities:
All of these eligible activities have maximum CPE hours. For example, passing a certification exam is capped at 40 CPE hours in the year the exam is passed. Read the IIA's CPE Policy for details.
Whether you're looking for specific CIA continuing education or other types of IIA CPE, you may choose CPEThink. Their NASBA QAS Self-Study courses relevant to internal audit topics can help you meet your CPE requirements. But you must document the eligibility yourself and maintain supporting records for at least three years.
The IIA doesn't require CIAs or other internal auditors to upload CPE documents during the annual renewal process. You must use the CCMS (Certification Candidate Management System) to complete the process online. But if you're selected for a random audit, you must submit all supporting documentation to the IIA.
