The Securities and Exchange Commission has endorsed the outright adoption of IFRS in the United States. This growing acceptance of IFRS as a basis for U.S. financial reporting represents a fundamental change for the U.S. accounting profession.

This course provides an introductory overview of International Financial Reporting Standards, including detailed discussions of the impact that IFRS will have on U.S. businesses. This course also includes comprehensive reviews of the IASB structure and its standard-setting process, the basic framework that serves as the foundation for IFRS and the differences that exist between U.S. GAAP and IFRS.

The course entitled Healthcare Reform: Pre-Existing Conditions, Benefit Limits, Rescission & Patient Protection Rules provides important information for insurance agents and other advisers who are counseling clients on certain requirements imposed on group health plans and individual insurance coverage by the Act and Regulations. The course begins with a discussion of “grandfathered” health plans, their definition and the implications of grandfathered status for the timing and applicability of the Act’s provisions. The requirements of the Act and Regulations addressed in this course are those relating to ensuring patient protections—specifically, protections related to their ability to choose healthcare professionals and the provision of emergency services—and the ability of health plans to:

    • Exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions;
    • Impose annual and lifetime benefit limits for essential health benefits; and
    • Rescind health coverage.
Accordingly, the course provides information concerning the rules applicable to the ability of a group health plan or a health insurer offering group or individual health insurance coverage to exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions and the effective dates of such rules. In addition, the course discusses the rules governing the ability of a group health plan or a health insurer offering group or individual health insurance coverage to impose dollar limits on essential health benefits. The limited ability of a group health plan or health insurer offering group or individual health insurance coverage to rescind such coverage is also addressed. Finally, the course discusses the protections guaranteed to patients in their choice of available healthcare professionals in plans involving a network of healthcare providers and in the availability of patient emergency services.

These statements, which require prospective treatment for new business combinations having fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2008, mandate what is referred to as the acquisition method. Moreover, the purchase method of accounting will no longer be permitted for acquisitions closed after the effective date of the new rules. This courseemphasizes both the theory and practice relating the new standards (i.e., the acquisition method). However, since preexisting accounting methods (e.g., poolings of interest and purchase methods) will continue to be used for transactions closed before the effective dates of ASC 805 and ASC 810, a comparison of old and new rules prepare practitioners for dealing with the variety of practices they will encounter at their clients or employers. This course explores functions in Excel that CPAs should use to enhance productivity and ensure accurate answers when working with data. Functions are built-in, preset formulas in the Excel program that calculate certain values or accomplish a certain calculation goal. Formulas are instructions given to Excel to perform calculations. As an example, if you wanted to add the values of cells A1, B1, C1, D1 and E1, you could type the formula =A1+B1+C1+D1+E1. However, an easier way to arrive at the total value of these cells is to use the SUM function in Excel that adds up all the given cell values with a couple of mouse clicks and inserts =SUM(A1:E1).

The preset SUM function in the above example is much easier than typing in all the cell values that you may want to add together, especially when there are many cells. This demonstrates how functions can enhance productivity. In this example, using the SUM function also provides a much easier to review and less error prone means of adding these cell values. If you were to type in each individual cell into a formula, the likelihood of error in terms of missing a cell or using a cell that was not intended is much higher. The SUM function, therefore, ensures more accurate answers.

Please note: User of versions of Excel prior to 2007 may experience formatting and formula errors or issues.

IFRS Learning Modules are a series of courses that provide in-depth overviews of various topics related to International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”). IFRS represents the global accounting principles that provide the foundation for most of the world’s financial reporting. These Standards establish the recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure requirements for transactions and events reflected in IFRS financial statements.

The growing acceptance of IFRS as a basis for U.S. financial reporting represents a fundamental change for the U.S. accounting profession. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and their U.S. equivalent (the FASB) have made commitments towards the convergence of U.S. GAAP and IFRS and are working to eliminate as many differences between the two Standards as possible. Ensuring the business continuity, the continuation of critical business operations in the event of an unforeseeable disaster, is a chief responsibility of an organization’s management team including its financial officer or external CPA. According to Kit Tuveson, chairman of the International Facility Management Association and worldwide facility operations manager for Hewlett-Packard in San Francisco, only 40% of the companies that experience a disastrous event at their place of business will ever open their doors again. In addition, a study developed by the University of Minnesota found that the average company which was put out of business for as little as four and a half days, experienced up to a 50% loss in its capacity to operate1.

Many companies believe that because they are small that they are at less risk and are unable to afford the protection that larger companies can afford. However, it is the smaller companies that are at the greatest risk and therefore should be even more inclined than the larger companies because they are more likely to have all their eggs in one basket. For example, the smaller company commonly has only one work location, a limited number of employees, all of their assets stored at one location, etc.

This course will introduce you to the process of developing, communicating and testing a disaster recovery plan to avoid this potential pitfall and ensure the continuation of critical business operations in the case of an unforeseeable event.

Throughout this course the term “disaster” shall mean any unforeseeable event which has the potential ability to cause interruption in the normal business operations of an organization. This would include natural disastrous events such as fire, flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, etc. in addition to electrical power failure, communication system malfunction, information system crashes, etc.

We will begin by taking a look at a mock scenario of a company which experiences a flood during the normal course of a day. This company does not have a disaster plan in place and as a result, experiences a huge loss both financially and emotionally.

You will then be introduced to some of the processes and procedures which this mock company and your company or clients can utilize to ensure the continuation of critical business operations in the event of an unforeseeable disaster in order to reduce your financial and emotional risk.

This course will then revisit the mock scenario under the assumption that the company did have a disaster plan implemented when the flooding took place and compare the resulting damages imposed by the event.

Finally, you will be provided with additional resources that you may choose to utilize when developing your own disaster plans and a glossary of some of the more common disaster recovery terms.

In addition, the Securities and Exchange Commission has endorsed the outright adoption of IFRS in the United States. Therefore it is clear that IFRS represents the future of financial accounting and reporting in the United States.

Module 6 of the IFRS Learning Module series presents an overview of IAS 33 Earnings per Share; this overview includes a detailed discussion of the processes for calculating and reporting earnings per share measurements in IFRS financial statements. The course also discusses the IASB’s and FASB’s efforts towards achieving convergence in EPS reporting.

Therefore it is clear that IFRS represents the future of financial accounting and reporting in the United States.

Many people consider accounting a tedious job, but not John Lewis. Throughout his three-year tenure with Unified Trucking he had ostensibly been a model employee, missing only a few days of work and conquering the Herculean task of bookkeeping single-handedly. The company’s continued growth and profitability were the only indications management had ever needed to determine that John performed his job well. His professionalism and dedication made supervision unnecessary. John insisted on handling any problems or discrepancies personally, and made it clear that the buck stopped with him.

In fact, many bucks did stop with him, followed him home and neatly deposited themselves into his bank account. In three short years John managed to use his authority and exclusive bookkeeping access to bilk the company of nearly $100,000. The funding for the United States government’s operations and its various programs occurs through the tax system. The history of the U.S. includes various levies, such as tariffs, custom duties and excise taxes, which were adopted to finance the government’s needs at the time, including war efforts. The 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was ratified in 1913, authorized Congress to enact an income tax1. Since that time the U.S. government and tax system have evolved to include different forms of taxes and programs enacted such as Social Security and Medicare that remain in place today.

At times the terms “employment taxes” and “payroll taxes” are used interchangeably. This material will use “employment taxes” when referring to income tax withholding and Social Security, Medicare and federal unemployment taxes as this is the term that appears to be used most often by the Internal Revenue Service when describing the indicated taxes. This course will detail the federal employment tax requirements and responsibility that employers have for filing returns and making tax payments on a timely basis.

Although requirements also apply in most states for income tax withholding and unemployment taxes, state obligations are not covered in this course.

Information on internal controls related to the tax withholding, payment and reporting process will be reviewed along with the consequences of non-compliance. Information presented by the IRS on employment tax investigations and prosecuted cases is also included to illustrate the nature of tax evasion schemes and the penalties imposed for willful actions.

Financial Forecasting Tools - Using Excel and Financial Ratios to Build a Forecast

Financial forecasting is an estimate of financial performance for a future period. Essentially, it’s an educated guess of the composition of future financial statements. It’s a guess as no one, no matter how good they are, can accurately predict the future. However, it’s an educated guess because one can use historical factors and adjust them for known current events and future plans to arrive at the forecasts. There is a difference between forecasting and planning. Forecasting is much faster and involves significant uses of estimates whereas planning entails the aggregation of a much greater level of detail to support the end result and to use as a comparison to actual results. This course will not cover planning nor a detail “build” of data. The intent is to use overall data to create summary forecasts of financial performance so that lenders may be timely informed of covenant issues, cash and debt needs may be anticipated and other issues may be addressed on a timely basis. There will not be supporting detail. However, the results will be explainable to shareholders, owners, potential investors or lenders and, more importantly, will make sense from an overall standpoint.

Bernard Madoff Investment Securities LLC was the source of the largest financial fraud in US history. Madoff perpetrated a simple Ponzi scheme whereby older investors were paid with newer investor funds, thus providing the impression of actual investment returns. The extent of the losses related to Madoff’s Ponzi scheme has been estimated at $50 - $65 billion.

Many are astounded to hear that Bernard Madoff Investment Securities LLC was audited by a CPA. Unfortunately, Madoff’s CPA apparently did not subscribe to the AICPA Code of Conduct as most of the rules contained in the code were ignored. What follows is a case study examining the conduct of Friehling & Horowitz CPA’s P.C., the CPA firm that audited Bernard Madoff Investment Securities LLC, within the context of the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct.
